Foundations of Peer Supports is an introductory training funded through the Rhode Island Division of Developmental Disabilities. The course is the first step on a career path towards becoming a Peer Support Specialist.

A Peer Support Specialist is someone who works for a certified DD provider agency or organization to provide the new Peer-to-Peer Services that are funded through the RI Division of Developmental Disabilities.

There’s no cost to participate in this course, but you must confirm that you meet the following 3 eligibility requirements when asked to do so on the application:

Requirement 1: To be eligible for the Foundations of Peer Supports Training, you must have an Intellectual/Developmental Disability (I/DD). This is important because it means you have lived experience to share!

If you need to bring a support person, they can take the class with you! Your support person needs to fill out their own application, and both of you need to come to the interview together.

Requirement 2: This training will provide the foundations of Peer Supports and a basic understanding of the RI DD System. Only RI residents are eligible to apply.

Requirement 3: To participate in this training, you must be at least 18 years old, and have already exited high school. This does NOT mean you need to have a High School Diploma or a GED. It means you cannot still be in High School, even if you left without graduating or getting a GED.
